Trip Overview

(Also available by clicking 'Trip Overview' on the right hand side)

This blog is for Steve Bateman’s and Graham Dore’s 100 Cols tandem cycling Challenge in June 2016.

Described as the toughest bike ride in the world the 100 Cols tour takes in some 100 of the biggest mountain passes in France – legendary passes such as the Tourmalet, Mont Ventoux, the Galibier, the Télégraphe, and Grand Colombier are all included as are the mountain areas of the Bourgogne / Beaujolais, the Massif Central, the Pyrenees, the Cevennes, Provence, the Alps, the Jura and the Vosges. The ride is over 4,000Km long and covers a whopping 67,000 meters of ascent (and descent, since it is a loop and finishes up back where it starts!).

We will be undertaking the challenge unsupported and will be carrying our overnight luggage on the bike with us.

We are both long time cyclists and have completed various challenging trips previously, some together on the tandem and some with Steve on the tandem with other ‘pilots’ and Graham on his solo bike. Steve has a deteriorating eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa and has lost most of his sight.

The official website for the 100 Cols ride can be found here:

Hopefully we will be able to update this blog most days once we are under way.

Bryan Chapman 600k Audax

Steve and I rode the Bryan Chapman together over Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th May. It took us about 33 hours to ride from Chepstow up through Wales (the pretty way) to the Menai Bridge and back. We had minimal sleep (just a couple of 15-20 minute catnaps). It froze towards the latter part of the night, which took us a bit by surprise but apart from that It was a fantastic ride. This was our last training ride - I think we are ready for the 100 cols - bring it on 😃
